Great Gap Control by Islanders and Blue Jackets

https://vimeo.com/882883064?share=copy

Here is a clip that showcases strong defensive gap and stick detail by both the New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets.

What to Watch

  • In the first sequence the Blue Jackets' D take a step forward and inside the dots
  • they declare sticks in front & quickly close down the rush prior to the red line and transition back to offense
  • The Islanders' D waste no time getting up the ice and setting gap
  • This combined with great stick detail and angle allows them to kill the entry attempt by the Blue Jackets
  • The Islanders D are able to shift and play tight man on man because the 3rd forward is back and covers the weak side
