Bruins Defense Show How to Play a 2 vs 1 Defensively

https://vimeo.com/870116215

From a defensive point of view a 2 vs 1 can be tough to teach young players. The golden rule is to try and eliminate any pass across the goalies eyes, aka the "Royal Road". This Boston Bruins defender plays this 2 on 1 very well with a little help from the backchecker.

What to Watch

  • The defender always has their stick in a position to discourage the pass across the "Royal Road".
  • At the same time they are trying to keep the puck carrier to the outside as much as possible to cut down their shooting angle.
  • The goalie is able to come out well past the top of their crease to cut down on the angle because they know the pass is not coming across their eyes.
