Quinn Releases Puck Behind Heels on Zone Entry

https://vimeo.com/901252807

This is a great offensive skill for all players to work on. When you release the puck behind your heels you reduce the chances of the defender being able to go stick on puck to deflect or block the shot. The other advantage to using this skill is that you can change the angle of the shot quickly. Players will also be surprised at how hard they can shoot the puck in this position. Jack Quinn demonstrates this type of release very well in this clip.

What to Watch

  • He enters the zone on his strong side (he is right handed entering the zone on the right side)
  • His teammate creates space by driving between the two defenders
  • Quinn takes advantage of the space by slowing down and using his inside edges
  • He uses his backhand to pull the puck back behind his heels
  • In this position the defender cannot get their stick on it
  • He holds the puck in that position on his forehand until he picks his spot and releases the puck through traffic
