When the two top players on a 5 on 3 power play switch it can open up a few options and create some confusion for the penalty killers. In this clip the Pittsburgh Penguins use a switch up top to open up passing lanes and get players into position to one-time the puck.
What to Watch
- Pittsburgh uses low to high and high to low puck movement on the 5v3 power play to open up the PK and create passing seams
- Malkin then moves the puck to the low goal line player
- He and Letang then rotate positions in the high ice which opens a cross seam low to high pass to Letang, resulting in a goal
- Another subtle thing to note is that Malkin calls for the puck and causes the penalty killer to move their stick position and open up the seam pass
