McDavid Protects Puck and Beats Defender Off the Wall

https://vimeo.com/847075052

In the offensive zone if you can beat a defender off the wall, with or without the puck, you will create numbers towards the opponent's net. Players that can do this while protecting the puck create scoring opportunities on a consistent basis.

What to Watch

  • McDavid creates body position right away before he gets the puck on the wall, his body is between the puck and the defender.
  • He waits and sucks the defender in so that he absorbs contact and uses the contact to help propel him out off the wall.
  • His ability to accelerate out of the turn allows him to beat his defender towards the net and create numbers.
