Simple D to D Hinge in Neutral Zone Transition by Bruins

https://vimeo.com/870160991

A simple D to D Hinge in a neutral zone transition is a great concept to introduce to players around the U14 age level (maybe U12 for more advanced teams). A well executed hinge results in a player carrying the puck up through the middle of the ice with space. The Boston Bruins show a good example of a simple hinge in this clip.

What to Watch

  • The first defensive player retrieves the puck and quickly faces up ice while going backwards to survey his options.
  • His defensive partner supports him in the middle of the ice and slightly staggered behind.
  • When the pass is made from D to D the player receiving the pass moves their feet and gets outside the dots.
  • Their defensive partner then fills in the middle of the ice slightly staggered and moving up ice.
  • When the next pass is made back to the player that made the first pass, they are moving up through the middle of the ice.
