Sparta Agility Skating & Passing Progression diagram

Sparta Agility Skating and Passing works on skating and keeping your head up in tight spaces.  You can replace the obstacles with stationary players.  The drill progresses nicely from no puck, to each player with a puck, to one puck being passed through the obstacles by the 3 players.

Setup

  • Set up cones/obstacles in a small area a little larger than a faceoff circle.  You can use stationary players instead of obstacles
  • Progression 1
    • No pucks
    • Players skate as fast as they can for 20 to 30 seconds
  • Progression 2
    • Each player with a puck
    • Skate while controlling the puck and avoiding obstacles and the other two players
    • After 20-30 seconds each player takes a shot
    • Players sort out who is shooting in what order (don't stop skating)
  • Progression 3
    • The 3 players have 1 puck
    • They need to keep skating while passing the puck through the obstacles
    • They should work for good passing lanes and give and go's
    • On the whistle they make a play on goal

Coaching Points

  • Keep your head up
  • Have awareness
  • Protect the puck and use deception on the obstacles
  • Supporting the puck
  • Exchanges and switches
